How do esports organizations make money?

Esports organizations make their money through various revenue streams. These include sponsorship, advertising revenue, merchandising, and a percentage share (usually 5-10%) of the prize money their teams win in competitions.

How do esports players earn their money?

Esports players earn their money through their share of tournament prize money, streaming revenue, and salaries if they are part of an esports organization, which is the case for most top players.

How do esports teams make money?

Fans new to the scene may think that esports teams make most of their money through prize money, but in reality, most teams make their money through sponsorships and branding deals with domestic and non-domestic sponsors who want to promote their products to a young audience. Esports makes its money by monetizing the young audience – primarily Millenials – who consume its content on a regular basis. This audience is very valuable for companies that want to target a younger audience for their products or services.

Which esports teams make the most money?

The highest-earning esports team of all time is Team Liquid, which has won $37 million in 2025 tournaments. Their biggest win came in 2017 when they won the Dota 2 International, where the first place prize was $10.8 million.

Do esports teams make money from tournament prizes?

Yes and no. On a smaller scale, teams make money from tournament prizes. Also, in these cases, players are often partially involved in managing and supporting the team.
However, many larger teams only receive a share of the players’ tournament winnings if they reach a certain amount. For example, a player’s contract may include a clause stating that “earnings up to $10,000 will be retained by the player.” Instead, teams rely on payments from tournaments, leagues, and developers. So ultimately, it depends entirely on the player’s contract.
It also depends on the game and tournament. For example, in TI4, it’s common knowledge that Valve paid the prize money to Newbee (the winning team) and the team took a cut of about 10% before distributing the rest to the players. In this case, the team took home about $350,000, and each of the five players received $630,000.
In addition, tournament revenue is a fraction of the money required to run a business, let alone an esports team. Several thousand dollars per event simply isn’t feasible, so teams rely on other sources of revenue.

Do esports teams make money from streaming?

An increasingly false assumption is that esports teams profit from streaming, broadcast rights and YouTube. In the early days of esports, many teams actually made a lot of money from streaming, especially on Twitch and its predecessor JustinTV.
Counter Logic Gaming made huge amounts of money in the early days of streaming, first on Twitch, then through exclusive contracts with Own3d and later with Azubu. At the time, there were incentives per 1000 viewers, larger payouts for advertising, and estimated payments in the tens of thousands per month. This, of course, was in addition to the initial incentives for signing exclusivity contracts.
Teams also had a set number of hours contracted, and players had to stream those hours, often receiving a much smaller share of the streaming revenue than in modern contracts. This was a major source of revenue for teams from the early 2010s until about 2016.
However, current streaming rates on YouTube and Twitch are much lower. For YouTube channels, current promotional rates mean that few teams can publish content that even covers their editing and production costs. In addition, players’ contracts increasingly do not include minimum streaming amounts or provide for a larger portion of streaming revenue to go to the players. The main benefit of streaming now lies not with the streaming services, but with the sponsors, who pay to get their products in front of viewers.
In fact, the main source of revenue and financial support for most esports teams is sponsorship, merchandising, investment and payments from developers and leagues.

Do esports teams make money from sponsorship?

Sponsors are one of the most important sources of revenue for teams. Sponsors pay teams thousands of dollars to get their products in front of millions of Esports fans around the world. As a result, teams have contracts with manufacturers of computer peripherals, gaming products, lifestyle brands, websites, apps, online services, and more.

Sponsorship terms typically include product exclusivity, logos on jerseys, streams, social media, websites and other elements. They can also include affiliate deals, where teams get a cut of every sale made through the team’s affiliate code or link. Or a full sponsorship that includes financial support and products. Razer is just one well-known company that does such sponsorships.

While the majority of sponsors are from the gaming space, with the growth of Esports, sponsors from outside are increasingly interested in sponsorship. BMW, Red Bull and Gucci are all large blue chip brands that have become heavily involved in esports. Red Bull in particular is heavily involved in esports through its huge marketing spend sponsoring leagues, teams and tournaments.

For many, sponsorships are the primary source of funding and revenue for teams. However, sponsorship is also a very uncertain source of revenue, as it is usually up for review after certain contract periods. Sponsorship can often be withdrawn if there are dramatic problems with the team, and most sponsorship contracts contain numerous clauses. Sponsorship is essential for esports teams, but it can be dangerous to rely on it. An example of this is how quickly G2 Esports fired its CEO after the controversy over tweets involving Andrew Tate. The risk to sponsorships was simply too high.

Do esports teams make money from merchandising?

This brings us to a less profitable but safer form of revenue generation for esports: merchandising. Teams can make and sell their merchandise. Selling directly or through distributors is a good source of revenue for teams.

In some cases, teams will handle the production and distribution of merchandise themselves. This means that they take on the risk and expense of producing fan merchandise. However, they also realize the highest potential profits.

In other cases, teams contract with esports merchandise providers, such as WeAreNations or ESL, which sell merchandise at events and tournaments as well as online. In these cases, the merchandising vendor handles the production costs and distribution. This usually means less overall profit, but also less risk and less investment. For many mid-sized and even larger teams, this method is preferable. Teams can also make arrangements where they receive a portion of the inventory from these merchants to sell and distribute through their own online stores.

Overall, merchandise is an extensive and reasonably reliable method of making money in esports. However, merchandise sales often depend on teams and retailers being present at events where merchandising sales surge.

Do esports teams make money from investments?

Direct investments are one of the most important ways for modern esports teams to make money. Unfortunately, an all-too-common problem with modern esports teams, and to some degree with all esports organizations, is that they rely on outside capital or initial investment and then rely on angel investor acquisition or investment down the road.

Sometimes this comes from traditional sports teams. This is the case with AS Monaco, which has partnered with Gambit Esports; Paris Saint-Germain, which has signed deals with both LGD Gaming and Talon Esports; and the Wolves, which has partnered with Evil Geniuses. In many cases, the sports team adopts the Esports organization as part of its marketing spend, seeing it as a way to associate its team with something new that is gaining popularity.

The goal is to attract a new generation of fans to their organization. In addition, many sports teams now see themselves not just as an organization for a specific sport, but as global entertainment and brands that transcend sports. Esports investment is one aspect of this change.

In other cases, large investment firms and groups are investing in Esports because they see the rapid growth and want to profit from the expanding industry. Typically, these investment firms want esports teams to turn into profitable businesses, and they bring their experience to the table. However, this can be a double-edged sword.

Do esports teams make money from developers and leagues?

Another way to make money is for teams to be paid directly by developers and leagues. Leagues and tournaments often pay significant amounts of money to teams to participate in their tournaments. Tournaments can make these payments because they have exclusive rights to broadcast and distribute these tournaments. This includes selling tickets on site and often, as in the case of an organization like ESL, selling fan merchandise on site.

In other cases, teams enter into revenue-sharing agreements with developers and leagues. Take the LCS, for example: teams have a partnership with Riot Games in which league revenue, including media contracts, team-branded digital goods, sponsorships and merchandising sales, is split between the teams and Riot. In return, teams pay a portion of revenue from the sale of merchandise and other products back to the league. These agreements often guarantee player salaries as well, which lowers costs for teams.

In CS: GO, the Louvre Agreement enshrined many teams as stakeholders in the league and gave them a long-term slot in return. This included revenue sharing and other perks. These agreements are often among the most lucrative, as they ensure that teams can make money from other revenue streams such as merchandising and sponsorship.

Other ways teams earn money in esports

Do esports teams make money from secondary businesses?

Smaller teams can often make money or share some of the financial burden of owning an esports team by owning secondary businesses. For example, organizations like Reality Rift in Dota 2 and GMT in Apex were PC and gaming cafes first and esports organizations second. Having other revenue streams than your own esports team or considering an esports team as a marketing expense is a great way to support the team without taking such a big risk.

Do esports teams make money from crypto and NFTs?

Cryptocurrencies and NFTs enjoyed great popularity between 2020 and 2022, and esports teams quickly jumped on the bandwagon. However, in light of some high-profile failures and the loss of prestige many teams suffered from selling cryptocurrencies or NFTs to their fans, many teams are now taking their foot off the gas. For now, it looks like it’s a fad that hopefully allowed teams to make some money before the markets crashed.

Is esports profitable?

Overall, it is a very difficult industry in esports to be profitable. Even the largest organizations struggle with profitability. But with careful planning and execution, it is doable and sustainable. The problem, however, is that for investors and venture capitalists looking to invest in teams, consistent growth and record profits are not guaranteed. In an industry that operates with highly variable costs and huge overhead, you can’t expect profits year after year.

So for many, esports teams must be viewed as a marketing effort. Something that can sustain itself and grow over time, but not bring in the huge profits one might expect from a billion dollar industry.
