The last open question in the FISSURE Playground 3 bracket has been answered, and not the way the rankings suggested. G2 beat FURIA 2-0 in Suzhou on Thursday, reaching the semi-finals of a Big Event for the first time since they lifted the BLAST Open London trophy more than a year ago. For anyone following the CS2 tournament scene, the top four is now set: MIBR face Legacy in an all-Brazilian semi, while G2 take on BETBOOM on Saturday.
Ancient: FURIA let it slip
FURIA picked Ancient and, for most of the map, looked like the better-prepared side. G2 came out of a lost pistol round to lead 5-2 on the T side, but molodoy’s AWP and a string of late-round clutches from yuurih turned the half around. FURIA went into the break 7-5 up, won a messy force-buy exchange thanks to a hero Galil from molodoy and an armourless Tec-9 from YEKINDAR, and pushed the score to 11-7.
At that point the map should have been theirs. Instead G2 got aggressive on the defence, MATYS started winning the duels that mattered, and the map turned into a round-by-round scrap that went all the way to overtime. G2 closed it 16-14. FURIA never recovered.
Dust2: a 13-3 collapse
The second map was barely a contest. G2 ran through Dust2 13-3, with FURIA’s individuals switching off almost completely. FalleN’s series line of 13-33 and a 0.51 rating tells the story of a team that had emptied the tank on Ancient. On the G2 side HeavyGod finished 42-25 with a 1.43 rating and 86.9 ADR, MATYS added 34-27 at 1.18, and NertZ and huNter- both posted above 1.0. KSCERATO’s 1.21 was the only FURIA rating above 1.10.
Why this matters for G2
G2 have spent the past year as the team that always loses the quarter-final. Beating FURIA – one of the highest-ranked squads in a field that, frankly, was not deep – is the first sign that the current lineup can survive a playoff bracket. MATYS has now been the standout in both the 5star elimination match and the FURIA quarter-final, HeavyGod has found his form at the right time, and Inferno, Ancient and Dust2 all look like maps they can win against anyone at the event.
For FURIA the exit is a repeat of an old problem: strong group stage, tactical control for large parts of a map, and then a collapse once the opponent’s stars start hitting shots. Losing a 11-7 lead on your own pick is the kind of result that follows a team into the next event.
Semi-final picture and the betting angle
Saturday’s bracket reads MIBR vs Legacy and BETBOOM vs G2. On paper BETBOOM should be favourites against G2 – they went straight to the semis from the group stage and have had an extra day to prepare. But G2 arrive with momentum, a settled map pool and two players in form, so the pre-match line will probably be closer than the head-to-head record suggests. The all-Brazilian semi is harder to call. MIBR crushed Alliance 2-0 and have looked sharp, but Legacy also skipped the quarter-finals and come in rested. Expect a full three maps.
