The post-Porto lull in Counter-Strike lasted barely a day. FISSURE Playground 3 opens in China on Tuesday, September 8, with 16 teams, a $1,000,000 prize pool and a field that looks very different from the one that just fought over the BLAST Open Porto trophy. Spirit, Falcons, MOUZ and Vitality – the top four teams in the world – are all absent, which leaves FURIA as the highest-ranked side in attendance and turns the event into an open shootout for everyone sitting just below the elite.
Format: two double-elimination groups, six playoff spots
The 16 teams are split into two double-elimination groups of eight. Group play runs from September 8 to 10, and three teams from each group advance. Group winners skip straight to the semi-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams meet in the quarter-finals from September 11, with the final on September 13.
Prize money is split between player and club shares. The champions collect $165,000 for the players plus $135,000 for the organisation – $300,000 in total – while the runners-up take home $160,000 combined. Even a 13th–16th finish is worth $15,000 all in, so nobody leaves empty-handed.
The field: FURIA on top, Legacy and G2 close behind
By HLTV’s ranking, FURIA are the class of the field. FalleN’s side sit fifth in the world after the latest update and arrive with YEKINDAR and molodoy flanking KSCERATO and yuurih. Brazilian rivals Legacy, a top-ten team in the late-August ranking, and G2 – who have been rebuilding around huNter-, NertZ and HeavyGod – are the most obvious challengers, with 9z, FaZe, Astralis, The MongolZ and BETBOOM rounding out the seeded half of the draw.
The other half is where the value lives: PARIVISION with Jame and FL1T, GamerLegion, magic, BIG, MIBR, hometown side TYLOO, Sweden’s Alliance and Mongolian qualifiers 5star. Several of these rosters are fresh – MIBR only added tomaszin at the end of August – so form is hard to read, and that uncertainty tends to show up in the odds at the leading esports bookmakers.
Snax out for GamerLegion’s opener
The first roster wrinkle arrived before a single round had been played. GamerLegion captain Snax has been held up by travel problems and will miss at least the team’s opening Group B match against FURIA on Tuesday at 14:00 CEST. Assistant coach Denis “Grashog” Hristov steps in alongside REZ, Tauson, hypex and FL4MUS. HLTV reports that there is no confirmed date for Snax’s return, so the team could be playing with a coach in the server for more than one map.
That makes FURIA versus GamerLegion the most lopsided opener on paper, and the one where the pre-match line probably undersells the favourite. Losing an in-game leader to a stand-in with zero maps played this season is about as disruptive as roster news gets on day one.
Day one schedule
The action begins at 05:00 CEST with 9z against 5star and Legacy against magic. The MongolZ face MIBR and FaZe meet Alliance at 08:00, followed by PARIVISION versus TYLOO and BETBOOM versus BIG at 11:00. The late slot at 14:00 brings G2 against Astralis and FURIA against a Snax-less GamerLegion.
