Evo back in Tokyo in 2023

The Evolution Championship Series (EVO) belongs in Tokyo, no question about it. This year, the organizers have moved to Las Vegas. Next year, however, the EVO is to be held again – as always – in the Japanese capital.

Date already fixed

The EVO 2023 is not too long away. The biggest fight game tournament in the world will be held between March 31 and April 2. It will be played at Tokyo Big Sight.

Looking back to Las Vegas

This year’s tournament took place over three days in Las Vegas in early August. Gamers fought their battles in the following games: Guilty Gear Strive, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, The King of Fighters XV, Mortal Combat 11 Ultimate, Melty Blood: Type Lumina, Granblue Fantasy: Versus, Skullgirls: 2nd Encore and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

The top prize in the duo competition of $10,000 was secured by “NAKAT” and “VoiD.” They were among the favorites among bookmakers.

The game line up for Tokyo

The game line up for the Evolution Championship Series 2023 is already in place. Fans can look forward to almost the entire line-up of this year’s main event. It is absolutely certain that Guilty Gear Strive, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Tekken 7 and King of Fighters XV will be in the game lineup in the Japanese capital.

Furthermore, several manufacturers have announced that they will come up with new games and some game changes before the event in Tokyo. We’re thinking of Dragon Ball FighterZ with rollback netcode, King of Fighters with crossplay and more characters for Street Fighter 6, among others.

Anticipation at EVO Organizations

Although EVO 2022 was just a few days ago, anticipation is already building among officials for next year’s event. Returning to Japan is without question a special highlight for EVO managers.

“It is a great pleasure to have Evo Japan return to Tokyo for the global fighting game community. Japan is the cradle of competitive fighting games and we can’t wait to open the doors of Tokyo Big Sight next spring to celebrate its legacy with players and fans worldwide,” said Rick “TheHadou” Thiher, EVO General Manager.

The tournament formats in Japan

As usual with the Evolution Championship Series, a wide variety of main and side tournaments will be played in Tokyo. The Duo Fight will once again compete for its winner’s prize money of $10,000.

The second-placed team can look forward to 8,000 dollars, and the third-placed team will receive 7,000 dollars. Even the players in 25th to 32nd place will still be rewarded with $1,750.

2020 Tokyo was a huge success

The last Evolution Championship Series in Tokyo was played offline in 2020. At the time, games like SFV, T7, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Soulcalibur VI, Samurai Shodown, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate were on the main roster. 2021 EVO in Japan had to be cancelled due to corona.

By the way, in Las Vegas a few days ago, more than 7,000 players from 63 countries around the world were at the start. No question, the player record is to be broken next year in Tokyo. Anyone who knows the fan numbers of the fight games in Japan knows that the plan will probably be put into practice quite easily.
