Counter-Strike’s biggest summer bracket closed on Aug. 23 at the Accor Arena in Paris, and the trophy ended up in fairly predictable hands. Everything that happened before that did not. Team Spirit beat FUT Esports 3-1 in the grand final of the Esports World Cup 2026, collecting a $600,000 top prize and 1,000 club points. Along the way the top of the CS2 competitive circuit was dismantled almost completely.
Spirit stumbled first, then never lost again
Spirit’s tournament began about as badly as a title run can. They dropped their Group A best-of-one opener to JiJieHao on Mirage, 10-13, which pushed them straight into the lower bracket on day one. From there the run was clean: 2-0 over Luminosity, 2-1 over BIG in the decider, then a Round of 16 sweep of B8, a 2-1 quarterfinal over Team Vitality, and a 2-0 semifinal against Legacy.
The final followed the same shape. FUT took Cache 13-10 to open, then Spirit answered with Anubis 16-13, edged Ancient 16-14, and closed on Nuke 13-5. donk, sh1ro and the rest of the roster essentially spent 11 days proving that a Bo1 loss in a GSL group tells you very little about a team’s ceiling.
Legacy and FUT rewrote the pricing
The two genuine surprises came from opposite ends of the seeding. FUT Esports, a European side that had never been treated as a title contender, went through MOUZ 2-0 and then knocked out FURIA 2-1 in a semifinal that went the distance on Dust 2, 16-13. Brazil’s Legacy went further against better opposition: a 2-0 demolition of Natus Vincere in the Round of 16, then a 2-0 quarterfinal over Team Falcons, the world’s top-ranked roster on HLTV at the time. They finished third after beating FURIA 2-1 in the bronze match.
Meanwhile the pre-tournament shortlist collapsed. Defending champions The MongolZ were dispatched 2-0 by Falcons in the Round of 16 and finished in the 9th-16th bracket. NAVI were shut out by Legacy. Vitality, MOUZ and Falcons all exited in the quarterfinals for a $60,000 share. Four of HLTV’s top five teams were gone before the semifinals.
What it means for the next few weeks
The obvious lesson is that a 32-team GSL group stage feeding a single-elimination Bo3 playoff produces variance no model fully absorbs. That cuts both ways for anyone taking prices. Outright markets on this format are heavily exposed to one bad map veto, while series and map-handicap lines on individual matches held up far better than the tournament winner odds did. If you are shopping series prices, comparing lines across several esports bookmakers mattered more here than any single model, because the closing prices on Legacy and FUT moved dramatically from round to round.
The circuit does not pause. BLAST Open Porto follows almost immediately, with FISSURE Playground 3, StarLadder StarSeries Fall and ESL Pro League Season 24 filling out the autumn. Expect books to be cautious with Legacy and FUT pricing for a while, and expect Falcons and The MongolZ to be shorter than their EWC results suggest. Anyone opening a new account for the autumn schedule should read the terms on any welcome bonus carefully, since wagering requirements rarely fit a run of best-of-three esports markets neatly.
