With Modern Warfare 4 now just weeks away from its October 23 release, Infinity Ward has laid out the balance changes it is rolling into launch after two beta weekends. For anyone following the Call of Duty competitive scene, the update is a useful preview of how the game could feel once the pros get their hands on it.
SMGs finally get their teeth
The headline change is a broad buff to submachine guns. According to the developer, SMGs were falling short at the ranges they are supposed to dominate. Instead of lowering health pools, which would have forced a rebalance of killstreaks and equipment, the studio chose to raise weapon damage and shorten time-to-kill. The Vel 46 and the Striga received the biggest boosts, aimed at letting them compete with assault rifles rather than living in their shadow.
For competitive play this matters a great deal. A meta dominated by a single weapon class tends to flatten team strategy, while a healthier spread between rifles and SMGs gives rosters more room for creative map control and role splits.
Aim assist: small trims, same philosophy
Controller aim assist stays close to its open beta level, with only slight reductions. Infinity Ward says its goal is an even 50-50 outcome between equally skilled controller and mouse-and-keyboard players at roughly 5 to 15 meters, while keyboard players keep an edge at longer distances. Expect the debate to continue, especially now that PC support is a bigger part of the launch conversation.
Other fixes and a new mode
Beta feedback also led to Battle Hardened buffs, more Hardpoint spawn options and fixes for the Zodiac map. Notably absent was any word on skill-based matchmaking or detailed DMZ plans, two topics the community keeps asking about. The studio also made no esports announcements in this update.
Separately, the new Collateral mode has drawn attention. It blends Search and Destroy with a round-by-round buy economy: players start with a pistol, earn money from kills and objectives, and spend it on weapons, armor, equipment and perks. There is one life per round, no killstreaks and no health regeneration. If that sounds familiar, it is because the formula borrows from tactical shooters such as Counter-Strike and Valorant. Whether it earns a place in organized play is an open question.
