Two Game Changers regional titles were decided on Sunday, and both went to teams that had to do it the hard way. In Seoul, Gen.G GC came back from the lower bracket to beat FENNEL GC 3-2 in a full five-map Valorant grand final, while Nova Esports GC repeated the trick in China with a 3-1 win over Havoc & Yonder GC. Both champions now head to the Game Changers Championship in São Paulo, which runs from October 22 to November 2.
Gen.G lose the semifinal, then win everything else
Gen.G’s route to the trophy was anything but smooth. The Korean side dropped a 1-2 upper-bracket semifinal to FENNEL GC on September 15, which sent them into the lower bracket with no margin for error. From there they edged swaglord9000 2-1, beat FULL SENSE SISU 2-1 and then survived a five-map lower final against Team Falcons Vega, winning 3-2 on Saturday to earn a rematch with the Japanese team that had knocked them down.
FENNEL, meanwhile, had swept Team Falcons Vega 2-0 in the upper final and arrived in the grand final unbeaten at the event. Bookmakers made them the favourites, with Gen.G listed at roughly 2.04 to 2.23 pre-match – a sensible price given the head-to-head result, but one that ended up paying out for the underdog backers.
Five maps, none of them close
The series went the distance without producing a single overtime. Gen.G took their own pick of Split 13-9, FENNEL answered on Summit 13-9, and the Japanese side then won Lotus 13-8 to move within one map of the title. UR was the standout for FENNEL in that stretch, posting 21 kills on Lotus and landing a series of composed clutches.
Gen.G refused to fold. They took Ascent 13-9 to force a decider, then ran away with Sunset 13-4 in a map that lasted barely 35 minutes. DaNa finished the series with 101 kills to 71 deaths across five maps and went 21-9 on the final map, with miNt and 332 both closing above a 1.2 rating for the match. On the other side, FENNEL’s SereNa and suzu had strong individual maps, but the team could not find a consistent answer to Gen.G’s Neon-led attack once the decider began.
Nova Esports GC repeat the pattern in China
Roughly two hours later, Nova Esports GC completed a near-identical run in the Game Changers China main event. Like Gen.G, they had lost a 1-2 upper semifinal to the eventual grand final opponent, Havoc & Yonder GC, on September 16. Nova then beat Quguanghao Gaming 2-0, Victory No Limits Gaming GC 2-1 and Yew Reign Gaming 3-1 in the lower final before turning the tables.
The grand final itself was one-sided for three of its four maps. Nova took Haven 13-7 and Abyss 13-6, dropped Lotus 6-13 as Elina put up 28 kills for Havoc & Yonder, and then closed the series on Split 13-3. Clem was the most impactful player on the server, ending the match with 74 kills to 48 deaths across the four maps, with Kon adding a 23-10 opening map on Haven.
What it means for São Paulo
The two results give the Game Changers Championship two lower-bracket champions from Asia, joining Shopify Rebellion Gold, who secured their place from North America earlier this week. Whether Pacific and China can challenge the Americas teams that have dominated recent Championships is the big open question, but Gen.G’s 3-2 wins over both Team Falcons Vega and FENNEL suggest the regional gap is narrowing.
