Infinity Ward opened the Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta on Aug. 28, and for the first time a Call of Duty beta ships with a playable Warzone mode attached. The test runs until Sept. 1 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, Battle.net and Xbox on PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with no pre-order required. It is the first honest look at the systems the next competitive year will be built on.
The centrepiece is Zodiac, a new Resurgence map set in South Korea and built around a large weapons manufacturing facility. It carries 10 points of interest and a set of moving environmental features, including rotating solar panels and a pair of trains running through the middle of the map. The build teams behind Rebirth Island and Vondel worked on it, and the layout reads like a deliberate blend of those two: tight interior fights bolted onto open industrial sightlines.
Movement is the real change
The beta drops omnimovement. Warzone movement now tracks MW4 multiplayer closely, which Infinity Ward describes as more grounded and deliberate while keeping the pace Resurgence players expect. Tactical sprint stays. That single decision reshapes rotations, re-peeks and close-range duels more than any weapon tuning could, because omnimovement was the mechanic that defined how the previous cycle’s best players broke angles.
Weapons have been retuned specifically for Warzone rather than inherited from multiplayer. Damage ranges, bullet velocity, ADS speed, sprint-to-fire speed and mobility have all been adjusted, though Infinity Ward says time-to-kill should still feel familiar to anyone coming from the current build. Custom loadouts are absent from the beta entirely; players work with hand-crafted default kits and ground loot drawn from the MW4 arsenal.
New systems on the ground
Fuel Barrels arrive as an environmental interaction, and the SAM Turret joins the field upgrade pool as an answer to aerial killstreaks such as UAVs and Counter-UAVs. The killstreak selection widens to include more of the MW4 multiplayer list, with the strongest options kept rare. Recon Contracts now pay out a single-use Insight Killstreak that lets a squad peek the next gas circle, and Supply Run Contracts hand over a one-time discount plus an upgraded buy station stocked with exclusive items.
The beta launches with Resurgence Quads, and Casual Resurgence Quads rotate in during the window. Both playlists are temporarily switched off in the live game, which is a blunt way of pushing the Resurgence population into the test.
Why the reset matters for markets
Infinity Ward has separately confirmed aim assist adjustments for the Open Beta after Early Access feedback, while staying quiet on the louder demand around skill-based matchmaking. Taken together with the movement rewrite, it means historical form becomes a weak guide the moment competitive MW4 play begins. Early-cycle prices on a brand-new engine build tend to lean on reputation rather than current data, and that gap is where value usually sits for anyone comparing esports bookmakers ahead of the first majors. If you are opening a new account to cover the transition, it is worth checking the current esports betting bonuses before the schedule fills up.
The Open Beta closes Sept. 1. Full Warzone integration follows later this year.
