The Dota 2 offseason keeps delivering surprises, and the latest one comes from North America and Europe’s most recognisable brand: Team Liquid have signed Malr1ne as their new midlaner for the 2026-2027 season. The announcement landed on October 15 and instantly became one of the bigger storylines in the Dota 2 scene this autumn.
Why this signing matters
Malr1ne is no ordinary free agent. He lifted the Aegis at The International 2025 with Team Falcons, which makes him one of the freshest world champions on the market. Bringing in a player with that kind of big-stage pedigree gives Liquid an immediate talking point and a clear statement of intent: the organisation wants to be in the conversation again when the next round of premier events rolls around.
The timing is also notable because of what happened to his old home. Falcons announced in early September that they are leaving Dota 2, pointing to long-term sustainability as the reason. That decision sent a whole group of high-profile players back into the transfer pool, and Malr1ne’s move shows how quickly the market reacted.
A Liquid roster still taking shape
Liquid’s offseason has not been a quiet one. In mid-September the team parted ways with Ace, and for a while the rumour mill suggested ATF would slot in as the new offlaner. That did not happen – ATF instead signed with Team Yandex a few days later. Landing Malr1ne for the mid lane is therefore a clear step forward after a period of uncertainty, even if the rest of the line-up and the exact structure of the team will need to be watched closely in the coming weeks.
It is not the only reshuffle either. Topson has returned to OG after three years, LGD added SumaiL and Sneyking ahead of PGL Wallachia Season 9, and BetBoom Team brought TORONTOTOKYO back as coach while Save- shifted to the mid lane. The 2026-27 season is shaping up as one of the most open starting grids in years.
The champions and the challengers
At the top, the picture is still dominated by Team Spirit, who claimed their third Aegis of Champions at TI 2026 with a five-game grand final. Team Yandex also remain a force after winning BLAST Slam 7. For Liquid, closing that gap will be the real test: a TI champion in the mid lane is a strong foundation, but results at the big tournaments are what will decide whether this signing turns into a statement or just a headline.
What it means for fans and bettors
Roster changes like this one are exactly the moments when odds can move. Early in a new cycle, bookmakers have little form data to work with, so lines on a rebuilt team can look very different from a few months later. If you follow the scene closely, it can be worth comparing prices across the top esports bookmakers before the first tournaments of the season begin. As always, treat any bet as entertainment, set a budget in advance and never wager more than you can afford to lose.
For now, the big question is simple: can Malr1ne’s championship experience be the missing piece for Liquid? The first matches of the new season will start to answer it.
