The Dota 2 scene has a new big stage to watch: BLAST Slam 8 kicked off on September 29 and runs through October 11, with a $750,000 prize pool and sixteen of the strongest teams in the world fighting for it.
Format and stakes
The event opens with a GSL-style group stage: four groups of four teams, where the first-place finishers move on to the seeding matches and the second-place teams drop into a Last Chance stage. After that, the field enters a double-elimination playoff, with a best-of-five grand final deciding the champion. The playoffs are staged at BLAST Arena Studios in Malta.
The winner takes home $270,000, the runner-up receives $135,000, and third place earns $95,000. Those are meaningful numbers in a season where organizers keep fighting for the attention of the same top rosters, and they raise the pressure on every series from the first day.
Who is in the field
The invite list reads like a who’s who of current Dota. Team Spirit arrive as defending The International champions, while Team Yandex come in as the reigning BLAST Slam winners, which makes them the natural early favorites. Team Liquid, NAVI, LGD Gaming and BetBoom Team round out some of the headline names, and PARIVISION and LGD Gaming were among the sides that grabbed early wins in the opening matches on September 29 and 30.
LGD Gaming in particular will draw attention after their recent roster moves, and a strong start in a GSL group is exactly what a rebuilt lineup needs to settle into its new roles.
Why the GSL format matters
GSL groups are unforgiving. Because every team must win twice to advance, one upset in the opening round can force a favorite into an elimination game almost immediately. That volatility is what makes early-stage results so interesting for fans, and it is also why odds can shift quickly between the first and second matchday.
If you follow the market, remember that no tournament result is guaranteed and that betting should always be done responsibly. For newcomers, it helps to understand how welcome bonuses and their wagering terms actually work before you place a single stake.
What to watch next
Keep an eye on which first-place teams secure their spot in the seeding matches, how the Last Chance stage shapes up, and whether any of the favorites stumble before the playoffs move to Malta. With almost two weeks of Dota ahead, there is plenty of time for stories to develop, and the final bracket will likely look quite different from the pre-tournament expectations.
